Human Rights Heroes at Home
Global Exchange is proud to announce this year's honorees! See below to learn more about the inspiring work of this year's honorees. | | Samina Faheem Sundas, Founder of American Muslim Voice A culture of fear, suspicion, and hatred toward Muslims was rampant following 9/11. In response, Samina founded American Muslim Voice, an organization dedicated to creating lifelong friendships between Muslims and people of all communities. Her quest for understanding and friendship has replaced division, distrust and violence with hope and compassion. Global Exchange is honored to recognize Samina, true advocate of human rights and peace, as our 2009 Human Rights Peace Hero.

Growing fresh food through a network of urban gardens, educating the community and engaging youth, the People's Grocery increases access to locally-produced, healthy foods while raising awareness for justice. We are proud to honor the People's Grocery, a grassroots leader in organizing and developing local solutions to social, economic, and environmental issues.

For 15 years Mr. Barrera and the Center have documented repression of community and individual rights by state authorities and Mexico's military. Their work gives vital support to peoples who are defending their right to live free from fear, with the autonomy to control their own lands and resources and to make the basic economic decisions fundamental to keeping their communities healthy and intact.

We are honored that he was nominated as a Human Rights Hero, and are not surprised he received more votes than any other HRH@H nominee. Fisk has said that journalism must "challenge authority, all authority, especially so when governments and politicians take us to war." We are proud to honor Mr. Fisk and his commitment to truth and justice. | Global Exchange is honored to recognize all Human Rights Heroes at Home 2009 Nominees. View them here >> |
