I will be joining the train in the Bay Area, and meeting more than 200 fellow riders, sharing stories and strategies for change. I will be leading workshops on community rights, rights of nature and fracking, and learning from others as we come together from across the country to share knowledge and collaborate while enjoying a beautiful ride through breathtaking wilderness areas. But is “sustainable development” our end goal — and by whose definition? We cannot separate what we do to the Earth from what we do to ourselves. Yet, every element of our current, neoliberal economic system is intertwined with the idea that the natural world is property. We trivialize the fullness of life and diversity of natural world by labeling its elements “resources,” We must change this in our communities and through institutions like the United Nations.

Earth Rights Now.For many activists currently packing their bags for Rio, the goal is to protest the so-called “Green Economy”, the name given to the primary agenda for the Rio + 20 negotiations. Nicknamed the “Greed Economy” by many, the theory says we can only “save” nature by putting a price tag on what nature “does” for us. But we’re not showing up just to stand up for what we’re against, but to articulate what we’re for.
