Gather Supporters
Contact friends, family, local business organizations, fair trade groups, farmers' market participants and others to see if they're interested in working with you to organize a Buy Local Day in your community. Follow-up with a meeting to discuss plans and strategies.
Hand out flyers!
Get a group of people to hand out fliers in front of big chain stores. Also hand out fliers at local businesses, community events and elsewhere!
Ask Local Businesses to Offer Specials
Ask local businesses to offer special discounts or community-oriented events on Buy Local Day. Then create a list of the promotions and special events being offered and help to publicize them throughout your community.
Create a Local Business Directory
Create a list or a map of local businesses that consumers can reference. Make this directory available in public places throughout your community or on your community's website.
Host a Film Screening
Help educate others in your community about the costs and benefits of supporting local businesses vs. big box chains. Locally owned coffee shops and bookstores are great venues to host a film screening.
Hold a Press Conference
Organize a press conference with local businesses and consumer groups announcing Buy Local Day and encouraging community members to participate. Bring together local business owners, farmers' market vendors, and others.
Write a Letter to the Editor
Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper highlighting the importance of buying locally and encouraging others to support Buy Local Day.
Pass a Buy Local Day Resolution
Get your local city government to pass a resolution declaring a specific date as the official "Buy Local Day" in your community.
Buy Green
Encourage local businesses and consumers in your community to support the green economy by buying fair trade certified, organic and locally produced items.
Make EVERY DAY Buy Local Day!
Why stop at one day? If you're already committed to buying local, go further than a one-day action and work within your community toward Buy Local Week or Month! Create a coalition that promotes local purchasing year-round. The longer we can sustain buy local campaigns, the more likely it is that we'll have a real financial impact with local businesses and big box stores alike!
