I am managing Holiday Fair, Dec. 14/15 in the east bay to benefit the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant. Most items will be fair trade, including having the Harvest for Haiti coffee people make a special presentation.
December 2001 (Year-End Update)
Among our fair trade activities recently has been to support the Harvest for Haiti coffee group and to cooperate with the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant"s annual craft fair. The Fair sold fair trade items from many Guatemalan and Asian Co-ops
September 2001
The Ecumenical Peace Institute/CALC issued the following statement regarding fair trade:
"The Ecumenical Peace Institute/CALC, an inter-faith group dedicated to peace and justice issues, is 100% for fair trade principles. We support any group seeking to educate the U.S consumer how to recognize and buy products where these principles have been followed.
In the agricultural area, fair trade involves buying produce at a fair price from farmers, who create decent wages and working conditions for their crews. To us this means a healthy environment and product that is pesticide and herbicide-free and is not genetically altered-- in summary, a program which builds land sustainability and local community health and prosperity.
EPI/CALC applauds the efforts of organizations such as Global Exchange, Harvest for Haiti, and other groups which create opportunities in developing countries for a just and healthy life for small, organic farmers. "
