You'll be happy to know CWRU hosted the Fair Trade Fiesta this past weekend, which features Fair Trade tea, hot cocoa, coffee, chocolate and Fair Trade handcrafts from 10,000 villages. It was a huge success and around 50 people came, many of whom were completely new faces. We also showed "Santiago's Story", Global Exchange's "Trade Secrets" and Michael Moores "The Big One". We played trade trivia to give away the Fair Trade crafts for prizes! Here are some good pictures from the fiesta--and yes that's me in the giant sombrero! (See e-mail fairtradefiesta and good pics under campus updates).
March 2003
I've been able to get on the Starbucks page now, but it was weird for a while there. We didn't partake in the march 6th festivities, we did a protest against Office Max instead...a more general update--we went around town armed with comment cards and stopped in all kinds of restaurants and cafe's and talked with store managers about fair trade coffee. We probably hit about 15 places. One local cafe has gone 100% fair trade, and our local coffee cafe just off campus has agreed to brew one fair trade variety. And with the announcement from Seattle's Best about two new FT varieties, we'll be looking for our campus kiosks, which brew Seattle's Best to start brewing the additional varieties. February 2003
Case Western Reserve Universities Fair Trade Task Force in Cleveland is drafting a 100% Fair Trade Resolution for our undergrad student government. If anyone has a copy of one that they've passed, please pass it along! loretta@po.cwru.edu. I also wanted to share with everyone the website CWRU's Fair Trade Task Force created (compliments of Josh Ehrlich) http://home.cwru.edu/fairtrade/ Please use it as a guide if you're making your own or as a resource. Most info was taken and adapted from Oxfam and TransFair's materials.
I'm leading a group of students at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. We're called the Fair Trade Task Force and we're working on bringing Fair Trade coffee to our campus. So far, we have half of our coffee stands brewing one kind of fair trade coffee daily and we've have some promising conversations with the Dining Hall Manager. We'd like to be apart of the March 6th activity for Fair Trade. November 2002
So far i'm just starting a campaign at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. I'm gathering people interested in being on the Fair Trade Coffee Task Force. I'm going around to different groups, attending their meetings and doing a half hour presentation on Fair Trade coffee- mainly educating them on the importance of buying Fair Trade coffee where ever it is sold and getting the cafes and dining halls and local area vendors to brew fair trade daily.
