Current Status of Fair Trade on Campus: We got fair trade coffee as an option at the main student coffee shop. People can get drip coffee or expresso in fair trade varietes. There are good signs up that show what fair trade is all about. The Juice Place on campus (called jump start) serves all fair trade coffee (but not many people buy coffee there. The faculty place (adobe lodge) does not serve any fair trade.
What we are doing. 1. Writing letter to local Safeway to get them to put fair trade coffee at eye level on their shelves and to have a sign next to it explaining what it is all about. 2. Writing a letter to management of local coffee stores to get them to carry fair trade 3. When the letters are done, we are going to send delegations to the stores to have meetings with the management. 4. We are investigating the situation at the faculty dining place to see what our next step should be there. 5. We are brainstorming an action for the March 6th day of action.

We hosted Jorge Cuevas, manager of a Fair Trade Cooperative.

We hosted the California USAS conference this year and Deborah James was one of our speakers.
October 18, 2000
We hosted an event with Deborah James from GX, who spoke about Fair Trade, the global economy, and how we can support fairness for farmers by buying Fair Trade coffee. We did the event also with Rebecca Saldaña and Efrain from PCUN, the Oregon farmworker's union, to show the connections between agricultural exploitation at home and abroad. It was a well-attended event and we hope it will help us energize our campaign to get Fair Trade on campus and get NORPAC boycotted Oregon produce off-campus.
