Adam's Organic Coffees was founded in 1992 and has sold certified organic coffees exclusively, ever since. They offer 22 varieties. Adam Teitelbaum owner and founder is committed to the certified organic system as the highest measure of social and environmental stuardship in the coffee industry. He co-founded ORCA (Organic Coffee Association) last year to "promote and educate the customer and the coffee industry on the value of organic farming practices, and how they benefit the environment, the farmer and the consumer to create a wholesome value added product." The Fair Trade program works well as a complement to the certified organic program. Whereas certified organic addresses environmental issues related to local farm environments as well as workers' safety issues, Fair Trade addresses long neglected wage and price issues. Adam says, "The Fair Trade system rewrites the rules of the extremely volatile coffee commodity exchange, guaranteeing a fair price to small coffee farmer (five acres or less) and their democratically run co-ops. The critically important credit provided by green coffee importers to the co-ops is vital to breaking the cycle of severe hardship in many coffee growing families."
