Bill Harris, and business partner, Aileen Pistone, spent the fall of 1997 driving through Mexico and Central America talking with small farmers, researching the need for fair trade coffee. Three months and 13,000 miles later, they returned and started Caf_ Campesino. Located in Americus, GA, they import green (unprocessed) beans and sell to specialty roasters in the United States. Their mission statement says it all: Caf_ Campesino is dedicated to filling the American demand for specialty coffee and the peasant farmer's need for fair trade by sourcing coffee grown in socially and environmentally responsible ways. They currently purchase coffee beans from Guatemala, Costa Rica and Cameroon, Africa and they are in the process of contracting with co-ops from Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua.
