Dave Griswold, President
Sustainable Harvest, located in Emeryville, CA, was established in 1995 by founder David Griswold to provide small grower groups with greater economic incentive to harvest certified-organic and shade-grown coffees. Since its inception, Sustainable Harvest has emphasized information providing a detailed Grower Information Report (including video footage and color photos) for customers about each farm with whom they trade. This report details the kind of shade gradient, the shade tree species, the bird species and other indicator species of biodiversity on the farm, soil types, and full disclosure on any use of synthetic fertilizers or other chemicals. The company's selection criteria for shade-grown coffee was developed in collaboration with the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, Conservation International, and the Rainforest Alliance. The majority of Sustainable Harvest's coffee is certified organic, certified through Quality Assurance International, an accredited third-party agency by the International Federation of Organic Movements (IFOAM) and by the Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA) as well as other approved third-party organic certifying agencies. Sustainable Harvest trades with Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Brazil, Panama, Costa Rica, Peru, Colombia, and El Salvador, currently offering fair trade beans from Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Peru.
