Folk Art from La Palma

La Palma is a small town in the province of Chalatenango in Northern El Salvador near the Honduran border. Most of the residents are artisans who make their living producing a unique style of folk art. This unique craftwork is said to have been created by the Salvadoran artist, Fernando Llort. Crafts from El Salvador continue to change and find new means of expression.

Each La Palma item reflects the images of the every-day life of the region. Birds, houses and animals are part of their natural surroundings and are reflected in this form using readily available materials. The artists put their creativity and personality on each item so that the colors and designs are never exactly the same.

Global Exchange offers jewelry and pencil boxes, napkin holders, hanging wall plaques and keyholders, and hand embroidered dresses from the La Palma collective.
