The United States is addicted to oil. Although less than 5 percent of the world's population, we consume 25 percent of the world's oil. This dependence on oil endangers our environment, weakens our economy, contributes to human rights abuses, and undermines our national security.
The quickest way to break our oil habit is by challenging Ford Motor Company and the other major automakers to take immediate action to dramatically increase the fuel economy of their cars and trucks, which consume 40 percent of all the oil we use.
A great place to lay down this challenge is at the New York Auto Show, which is attended by more than 1 million people. Reports show that a large percentage of car and truck buyers attend auto shows prior to buying a new vehicle, so this is a perfect time to educate the public about the costs of our oil dependence.
But when it comes to making sensible, fuel efficient vehicles, the car companies have very little to brag about. That's why it's up to us to demand that Ford and the other car companies act now to break our oil dependence and help us create a cleaner, safer, more peaceful world. At the same time, we want to encourage people to get out of their cars and embrace cycling and mass transit.
