Students protesting UC apparel arrested

SF Gate/ San Francisco Chronicle
April 11, 2006
By Charles Burress, Chronicle Staff Writer
Eighteen students demanding that University of California-logo apparel not be produced in "sweatshops" were arrested at a sit-in at the UC Berkeley chancellor's office Tuesday afternoon. The students from Berkeley and other UC campuses were released after being cited on misdemeanor allegations of trespassing and refusing to leave a building, said campus spokeswoman Janet Gilmore. No decision has been made on other possible disciplinary action, she said. They were affiliated with the UC Sweat-Free Campaign and national United Students Against Sweatshops. The sit-in followed a campus protest, supported also by the AFL-CIO and timed to coincide with a similar one at UC Riverside Tuesday, demanding that UC President Robert Dynes agree to a "Designated Suppliers Program" where workers in approved factories can organize and receive a "living wage." UC spokesman Noel Van Nyhuis said the university already enforces strict standards for wages and working conditions among producers of UC apparel and that the President's office is continuing to review the new demands and is meeting with a special committee on the issue that includes students, faculty and administrators.
