OVER 900 FORMER GARMENT WORKERS have been laid off in San Francisco. We urge the Gap to demonstrate corporate social responsibility at home by committing to a significant amount of garment manufacturing in San Francisco. The Gap's leadership role improving working conditions in garment factories globally is commendable, but we urge them to address the economic and social crisis here in your corporate "hometown" that is a direct result of their outsourcing of manufacturing.
IN SAN FRANCISCO, EMPLOYMENT IN THE GARMENT MANUFACTURING SECTOR HAS DECLINED FROM 20,000 JOBS IN 1990 TO UNDER 3,000 JOBS TODAY. The garment workers laid off in San Francisco have included 140 workers from Nova Knits, Inc., a local factory which, until recently, manufactured apparel for The Gap. Outsourcing of garment manufacturing from the United States to countries with lower labor standards has led to devastating impacts on local garment workers, their families and the broader community.
WHAT DO WE WANT? We urge the Gap to expand its commitment to ethical sourcing to include a commitment to a significant amount of garment manufacturing here in San Francisco to support local garment workers, their families and the broader community.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Please tell PAUL PRESSLER, the President and CEO of the Gap to support local garment workers.
