Take Globalization Protests Seriously -- It has become difficult for economic organizations to hold international meetings without attracting large crowds of protesters railing against globalization, as evidenced by clashes over the last year in Seattle, Washington and Prague. Some organizers have attributed half the success of the anti-globalization coalition to, as one activist has put it, "the notion that the democracy deficit in the global economy is neither necessary nor acceptable."

Convention Violence Is Not a Given -- The city has more to fear from basketball fans than from environmentalists or WTO foes. Monday night's disturbance after the Lakers' championship victory at Staples Center was not a prelude to the Democratic National Convention at Staples Center in August. Bonfires will not be lit, nor squad cars or limos torched, at the entrance of Staples--not with the Secret Service in charge. Why Reform of the WTO is the Wrong Agenda -- In the wake of the collapse of the Seattle Ministerial, there has emerged the opinion that reform of the WTO is now the program that NGOs, governments, and citizens must embrace. What civil society, North and South, should instead be doing at this point is radically cutting down the power of the institution and reducing it to simply another institution in a pluralistic world trading system with multiple systems of governance. Woken up in Seattle -- The image of tens of thousands of protesters besieging the World Trade Organisation summit in early December was startling, in part because of the incongruity of the location: Seattle, the most relaxed of American cities. The true significance of the event lies elsewhere, however, in the changing political structures of international affairs. The 'Battle of Seattle' was the latest manifestation of the enormous shift in international politics caused by the end of the Cold War, the predominance of the United States, the globalisation of technology and business, and the rise of an 'international civil society'.
