Kenya hosts approximately 220,000 refugees from neighboring countries. They face serious challenges to their survival and are at great risk due to a lack of protection. The hot and dry climate makes it difficult for refugees to cultivate land to sustain themselves and render them dependent upon humanitarian aid. They suffer from shortages of food and other basics of life due to limited international resources. Many of the already reduced resources have been diverted to ongoing emergencies in surrounding countries. Refugees have no legal status due to absence of refugee laws in Kenya. Their physical security is endangered by various abuses, to name a few: extortion, harassment, arbitrary arrest and detention, sexual violation and political murders. Moreover, the domestic law in Kenya requires refugees to live in camps and thus does not provide for any assistance to a number of urban refugees living in harsh conditions.
