Talking Points for Cuba Call in Actions

Please use the following talking points in your call in to Congress and the White House Comments line:

  • The U.S. must pursue a policy of strict non-interference in the internal affairs of Cuba. Cubans have the right to conduct their own political affairs.
  • The recent report by the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, an arm of the U.S. State department, encourages the U.S. to intervene in the event of Castro's death or ouster. This undermines the ability of Cubans to determine their own destiny and has inflamed tensions when we most need normalization.
  • Americans must be "free" to travel to Cuba and learn more about our neighbors to the south. We must be "free" to associate and even trade with our brothers and sisters in Cuba. All U.S. citizens have a long-recognized right to travel.
  • In U.S. v Guest, 383 U.S. 745 (1966), the Supreme Court noted, "[the right to travel] is a right that has been firmly established and repeatedly recognized."
  • The effects of bad relations and unfair U.S. policy on Cuba reaches far beyond travel. After Hurricane Katrina, Cuba offered 1500 bi-lingual doctors as a good faith gesture. The United States declined.
  • The UN has voted against the embargo (of which the travel ban is a part) for fourteen years. Furthermore, the votes in favor of lifting the embargo have increased over the years. In 2005 the vote was 182 yes to 4 no, with only one abstention; the European Union and all the countries of Central and South America voted to lift the ban.
