An educational center for solar studies has been constructed in Cuba

Granma Publications
September 14, 2003
The institution's objective is to contribute to the creation of an energy culture through specialized information, conferences, and practical lessons about the functioning of panels, heaters, pumps, distilleries, and solar driers, among other things.

BARTOLOMÉ MARTÍ PONS The construction of the first Cuban educational center dedicated to studying the use of solar energy has been completed in the municipality of Bartolomé Masó, in Granma province. The construction was sponsored by the Cuban Society to Promote Renewable Sources of Energy (CUBASOLAR).

Enrico Turrini, who is from Italy and is the vice-president of the association EUROSOLAR, attended the inaugural ceremony. He is the author of many articles and books about renewable energy sources and has for several years maintained broad ties of friendship and solidarity with the Greater Antilles. Turrini gave the center a collection of books and educational games related to the topic.

Equipped with the necessary study materials, the center's objective is to contribute to the creation of an energy culture through specialized information, conferences, and practical training in the functioning of solar panels, heaters, pumps, distillers, and driers, among other things.

The new installation is part of Camilo Cienfuegos City of Schools, which is located in the foothills of the Sierra Maestra and was the first of the large educational works constructed by the Revolution.

The primary source of energy, solar radiation does not pollute, is evenly distributed throughout the territories, and its potential availability surpasses mankind's needs.

Each cubic meter of Cuba's territory receives a daily quantity of energy equivalent to a half-kilo of gasoline, an amount that is almost invariable throughout the year.

The direct transformation of solar radiation into electricity through photovoltaic conversion is one of the most promising sources of energy for humanity. Currently its use in isolated areas is the least expensive option. (AIN)
