Madrazo victorious in PRI elections, opponent challenges results -- A final vote count on Wednesday pointed to Roberto Madrazo as the next leader of the nation's former ruling party, though his opponent hoped to have the victory overturned after filing new charges of electoral fraud. (News Mexico)

Statement by Alianza Civica-Chiapas about the Chiapas Elections -- This election was characterized by a lack of training of electoral officials, vote buying and coercion, new fraud mechanisms, an abstention rate of over 50% of the population, a wide array of political party options which fragmented the vote, and the lack of opposition coalition candidates due to an electoral reform which prevented the formation of coalitions. PRI conserves majority in Chiapan Congress -- The Congress of Chiapas will once again be composed of an absolute PRI majority, the party which according to the State Electoral Institute (IEE) triumphed in 72 of 118 municipalities. (La Jornada)

Abstentionism calculated at 60% -- The elections celebrated this Sunday in Chiapas to renew the 118 municipal presidencies and 40 local deputies were distinguished by abstentionism within the electorate of 2,189,571 voters and by the significant numbers of voting stations which were not installed in the EZLN's zone of influence. Municipal Elections in Chiapas -- This coming Sunday, October 7 2001 local state elections will be held in Chiapas. One hundred eighteen municipal governments and forty local deputies are up for decision. Historically, elections have brought heightened tensions and violence within communities as political parties fight for votes. (Global Exchange)

Observation Report on the Municipality Elections in Guerrero -- This report on the municipality elections in the mountain region of Guerrero is the product of a collaborative effort between members of the Human Rights Center of the Mountain (The Tlachinollan Civil Association) in Tlapa Guerrero, and Global Exchange. The report is the result of election observation work done by both groups during the municipality elections that took place on the 3rd of October in Guerrero.

Labor Party considers the state authority to be lacking impartiality Centro Pro warns of a return to an "era of massacres" -- From the city of Morelia, Michoacan, national PRI leader José Antonio González Fernández, outlined for the party, the violent events which occurred in Acapulco, Guerrero after the elections,which resulted in the death of the son of PRD town council member, Marco Antonio López García, who was the object of an assault on Monday morning.
