What's Going On In Mexico?

US, Mexico to Intensify Fight Against Violent Drug Gangs

WOR Radio, John Gambling show
March 27, 2009

John Gibler, Journalist and Author: Mexico Unconquered: Chronicles of Power and Revolt joined The John Gambling Show to discuss what exactly is going on with drug lords and the U.S./ Mexican border.

Gibler said the explosion of violence is due to the infiltration of various drug cartels; in the 1980's and early 90's, drugs would come from Colombia into Mexico to be shipped into the United States - and this collaboration between the Colombian and Mexican cartels has been the force behind the excessive violence.

Gibler added what is now obvious is the exclusive attention of militarizing the border has forced cartels to shift their ways of moving the drugs over the border. This has now forced serious consideration amongst leaders to legalize drugs. The demand for drugs is really what is fueling all of this at the U.S. Mexican border

Finally Gibler said the war on drugs is on the wrong foot - it needs to address the economical and social roots of the trade. The added U.S. military presence is a window dressing at best.
