The Challenge for the New Voting Rights Movement:
Shrouded in history and steeped in ideals, our government today is one that certainly looks perfect from far away. A re-examination of our political system, however, quickly reveals the truth: Our democracy is falling apart at the seams. The economic and political elite are becoming ever more powerful—at the cost of the very people that they swore to represent.
Fortunately, growing numbers of Americans are mobilizing on a broad and diverse front to protect and democratize elections in the United States. Key reforms include public financing of elections, tamper-proof voting machines, Proportional Representation (PR), Instant Runoff Voting (IRV), equal access to the ballot, non-partisan election administration and debates, free access to commercial media, the elimination of the electoral college, the re-enfranchisement of ex-felons.
To help move these efforts forward, Global Exchange has initiated the Vote Justice Campaign to build an effective grassroots movement with the capacity to reform our electoral system, increase voter participation and representation, and make voting a powerful mechanism for social change.
Together, we will reform our democracy!
