Autonomous Communities

The San Andrés Accords: Three Years of Non-implementation, A brief summary of the major events of the three years since the signing of the accords. (La Jornada, 2/16/99)

Interview with Roberto Albores Guillen, Governor of Chiapas, translated from the Mexican weekly Proceso, June 21, 1998.

Interview with Hugo Sanchez, inhabitant of Taniperla, headquarters of the dismantled autonomous municipality, Ricardo Flores Magón, August 28th, 1998.

The Beauty of Resistance -- This month we begin the first of a series of diary pieces by a young U.S. aid worker from a Zapatista community in the jungle area of Chiapas. Her moving account chronicles the day to day struggle of indigenous peasants, and Zapatista women in particular, as they try to develop their communities under occupation by the Mexican federal army.

Autonomous Municipalities and the Rule of Law -- A discussion of the "rule of law" being applied in Chiapas to dismantle autonomous communities such as those in Taniperlas and Amparo Aguatinta. (La Jornada, 5/12/98)

The San Andres Accords -- The history and importance of the San Andres accords, plus a look at the legislative proposal by COCOPA that addresses the issues of Indigenous Rights and Culture, and the Mexican Federal Government's counter proposal, with the intent of illustrating the critical discrepancies between the two documents.

Communique from the Autonomous Community of Chenalhó -- from the President of the Autonomous Municipality of Chenalhó. The declaration is in response to accusations by the Mexican government that displaced Zapatista communities are refusing humanitarian assistance. In this context, this somewhat indignant declaration goes some way towards explaining the complexity of providing aid in conflictive areas of Chiapas.

Margarito Ruiz on Autonomy -- Margarito Ruiz is a former national congressman who is currently with the Independent Front of Indigenous Peoples (FIPI). During a Global Exchange Reality Tour in December, 1997, he described his organization's notion of autonomy. Much of the talk was recorded and transcribed:
