Dear Mr. Sheetrit:

I write to you as an American citizen concerned about the unlawful detention of Palestinians in the occupied territories. Following the most recent invasion of Palestinian cities that began on March 29, 2002, the Israeli military has undertaken a widespread campaign of arbitrary, mass arrest of Palestinian civilians. The human rights organization Adalah estimates that at least 5,000 Palestinians have been arrested since that date. Of those arrested, currently 1,500 to 2,000 people remain in detention camps. About 1,000 of these detainees have received administrative detention orders, meaning that they are detained without charge for periods of up to six months. Most of the detainees are arrested and held without being formally charged or brought to trial. The Israeli authorities frequently renew the periods of administrative detention so that many cases continue indefinitely. These practices violate the fundamental human rights of the prisoners.

I urge you and the Israeli authorities to release, immediately and unconditionally, ALL administrative detainees held on account of their political opinions or activities. I also urge you to release any others unless they are to be charged with a recognizable criminal offense and promptly tried in a proper court of law in accordance with internationally accepted standards for fair trial.

Israel's disregard for the legal, civil, and human rights of so many of the people it now governs must end. I will demand that my government in the United States pressure Israel to live up to international standards of fairness and its obligations to the Palestinian people by releasing all administrative detainees.

Sincerely,
