Coalition Building
Building coalitions with other groups in your community is essential to any divestment campaign's success. Consider possible natural allies, and get them involved as soon as possible. Coalitions work best when everyone is involved from the beginning. Invite partner peace and justice groups, religious communities, professional organizations, student activists, and anyone else you can think of to join your divestment campaign. Ask these groups to work with you to:
- Endorse the campaign and pass a resolution supporting divestment.
- Organize teach-ins, demonstrations, informational meetings, and strategy sessions.
- Participate in public meetings with city officials.
- Contribute to letter-writing and phone-banking campaigns targeting the city council, mayor, etc.
- Demand divestment of public funds from Israel at town hall and city council meetings.
- Place advertisements in your local newspaper and write letters to the editor.
Create a Petition
- Think carefully about the goals of your campaign. Divestment seeks to pressure Israel to change its policies and abide by international law. What specifically does that mean? By creating a petition, you can quickly and clearly communicate your goals and enlist support. Different divestment campaigns have slightly different petitions.
Public Education
Host a Teach-In
- Organize a town meeting to talk about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and divesting from Israel, show a film that portrays the reality of the Palestinian situation, or bring a knowledgeable speaker to your community.
Hold a Demonstration
- Get the attention of your community and rally support for divestment by organizing a provocative, creative demonstration calling for divestment from Israel's occupation.
Distribute Educational Materials
- In any of the above activities, always have educational materials available for the public. Download, print, and distribute the following brochures, fliers, and stickers:
