"There is no moral distance between the facts of life in San Francisco and the facts of life in Birmingham." - James Baldwin

Join The Center for Political Education and the SF Bay Area Television Archive for a special 50th Anniversary premiere of the Director's Cut of "Take This Hammer." This 59-minute documentary serves as a unique window into the Bayview, the Fillmore and Western Addition neighborhoods of San Francisco, 1963.

The CPE and Bay Area Television Archive have received special permission to screen the SF-Premiere of 59-minute Director's Cut, which includes footage of conversations with San Francisco youth that were considered too "incendiary" at the time and were never shown on TV. The "clean" version of the film first aired on February 4, 1964 on KQED.

After the film, join us for an audience Q and A with panel of current and former Bayview residents, and prominent artistic voices from today's San Francisco struggles against displacement and gentrification. The screening will be held in the historic Bayview Opera House and is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Bay Area Television Archive and the SF Arts Commission.
