Meeting: What Does "Realignment" Really Mean?
Realignment, a new law which shifts responsibility for many incarcerated people from the state to the counties, poses significant challenges to the health of all communities impacted by the criminal justice system in California. This October marks the one-year anniversary of its implementation. In the past year, our 58 counties have implemented the law in different ways, often leading to the increased presence of incarcerated people at the county level. Many questions still remain unanswered.
How has Realignment impacted those who have been sentenced under its terms? What does it really mean to have your loved one detained at a local jail for up to 2, 5, or even 10+ years?
Come hear from people who have been impacted by Realignment, including testimonies from people inside county jails, and help us understand and expose the human costs of incarcerating people in local jails, and how it affects the well-being of all communities in California.
