Speaking Event: Understanding the Roots of the Chinese Growth Miracle
In the last 35 years, the Chinese economy has developed from a poor country weakened by the Maoist experience to the world's second largest economy. Given the size of the country, the Chinese growth miracle has been affecting more and more the world economy. What are the reasons for China's growth miracle? How long will it last? There is now more and more consensus on the answer to those questions among the world's experts on the Chinese economy.
The roots of Chinese growth, as well as the country's current institutional weaknesses, are strongly related to China's unique history. Gérard Roland, a professor of economics and political science at the University of California, Berkeley, will discuss the history behind China's economic growth, its impact of the global economy and what we can expect in the future.
