This year we celebrate the work of:
Eduardo Galeano -- International Awardee
Eduardo Galeano has served as the conscience of the left in Latin America and an inspirational force behind the rise of progressive politics among its people. Considered "the single most important literary voice to come out of Latin America in the last decades," Mr. Galeano has used the written word as a powerful advocacy mechanism to protect human and economic rights for the poor and express his discontent with the historical and contemporary exploitation of Latin America's people and land. A prolific journalist and author, he is best known for his novels Memoria del Fuego (Memory of Fire) and Las Venas Abiertas de America Latina (The Open Veins of Latin America).

Gold Star Families for Peace - Cindy Sheehan -- Domestic Awardee
Channeling their grief into action, Cindy Sheehan and Gold Star Families for Peace have galvanized the anti-war movement, demanding answers from Bush about the legitimacy of the war. Titled the "Rosa Parks of the anti-war movement" by Rev. Lennox Yearwood and referred to as "Peace Mom" by CNN, CBS and other media, Ms. Sheehan has become one of the most outspoken leaders of the peace movement and has succeeded in informing the public through mainstream media about an unwarranted war that has resulted in thousands of American and Iraqi deaths.

Malik Rahim -- Community Builder Awardee
During the chaos of the storm and in the devastation that followed Hurricane Katrina, Malik Rahim demanded justice for those whose needs were entirely overlooked. He forced the media to recognize the failures of the government and the racial and social inequalities uncovered by the hurricane. In response to the ineffectiveness of local and national authorities, Mr. Rahim has become a leading organizer in rebuilding his community in New Orleans through the Common Ground Collective and Rebuild Green. His vision and plan include a grander future for the city rooted in justice, equality and environmental sustainability.
