Domestic Award Recipient Fr. Louie Vitale is a Catholic priest working in San Francisco's marginalized Tenderloin district. He spent the end of 2002 and beginning of 2003 in Federal prison near Las Vegas for "crossing the line" at the infamous School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he had protested this training ground for human rights abuses. Fr. Louie is co-founder of both Pace e Bene, a movement teaching nonviolence, and the Nevada Desert Experience, an organization that successfully pushed for a moratorium on nuclear testing and which continues the campaign against new efforts to develop and test nuclear weapons. He has long been associated with the Religious Witness with the Homeless, the Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights, the Bay Area Organizing Committee and SOA (School of the Americas) Watch.
