His Excellency Sir Ketumile Masire, Immediate Past President of The Republic of Botswana

Mr. Ketumile Masire speaks on HIV/AIDS, social, economic and political issues affecting Africa’s development and their implications for peace and security in the continent. He will also highlight the Botswana experience that have allowed Botswana to maintain a peaceful, prosperous democracy.

Ketumile Masire started his career as a farmer and educator. He entered politics when Botswana gained independence from British colonial rule in 1966. Initially serving as a member of parliament, Masire rose to become the second president of Botswana, serving from 1980 to 1998. Masire served as the first vice-chairman of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1991(now African Union) and as chairman of the Eminent Personalities of the OAU Committee Investigating the Circumstances Surrounding the 1994 Rwanda Genocide. He was also a member of the Commonwealth Observer Group to the 1999 Nigerian Assembly and Presidential Elections, and from 2000 to 2003 he was facilitator for the Inter-Congolese National Dialogue. President Ketumile is the current and 4th Balfour African President-in-Residence at Boston University’s African Presidential Archives and Research Center(APARC).
