Temporary Online Store Holiday Helpers

Position: Temporary Online Store Holiday Helpers

Employment Dates: November 5th 2008 through December 23rd or Jan 5th 2009, with the possibility of starting with limited hours sooner.

Salary: : $11/per hour

Work Schedule: 9-5 at least 2 days a week or 4-8 5 days a week, flexible schedule desired.

The Global Exchange Online Store is a Fair Trade retailer that ships gift items directly to consumers through the mail. The Global Exchange Online Store generates income for thousands of artisans and their families in over 40 countries, by operating according to Fair Trade Criteria. We are looking for a few enthusiastic, hard working individuals to work in our not-for-profit Online Fair Trade Store warehouse in San Francisco's Mission District during the 2008 holiday season. This position requires a self-motivated person with an interest in Fair Trade and socially conscious business that is able to work well in a team and warehouse environment.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • physical fulfillment of orders (packing and shipping boxes)
  • gift-wrapping
  • receiving shipments
  • printing shipping labels
  • customer service on the phone
  • cleaning work area
  • assisting fellow employees as needed

    Experience and qualifications:

  • commitment to Fair Trade and the goals of Global Exchange;
  • able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • ability to lift heavy items (at least 20 pounds)
  • very high attention to detail with ability to multi-task;
  • honest, hard working person with energy and enthusiasm
  • working knowledge of Word and Excel preferred
  • ability to work independently as well as part of a team

  • Major Gifts Officer
    Global Exchange, an international nonprofit human rights organization based in San Francisco, is seeking an experienced Major Gifts Officer to join our fundraising team. This is a leadership position in a department of 6 full- and part-time fundraisers. This position reports to the Director of Development and is supported by the Membership Coordinator, Development Assistant, and Data Entry Manager.

    Global Exchange is an international nonprofit human rights organization dedicated to promoting social, economic and environmental justice around the world. We envision a people centered globalization that values the rights of workers and the health of the planet; that prioritizes international collaboration as central to insuring peace; and that aims to create a local, green economy designed to embrace the diversity of our communities. Our programs include Reality Tours to both U.S. and international destinations; a Fair Trade program (including four retail stores); a Public Education program producing events, such as the Green Festival, articles and publications. Our campaigns are designed to influence US policy; both corporate and governmental, around issues such as trade policy and immigration, child labor, democracy, peace, freedom from oil and the new local green economy.

    Job Requirements:

    • 3+ years fundraising (including major giving) experience; Staff management and leadership a plus
    • Solid written and verbal communication skills
    • Highly motivated, creative and organized; detail-oriented
    • Ability to take initiative; work independently as well as able to work as part of a team.
    • Flexibility; ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
    • Dedicated interest in human rights and social justice work;
    • Ability to travel
    Responsibilities include:
    • Managing a major gifts program raising $700,000+ from current donors and prospects.
    • Developing and implementing an annual individual giving action plan and maintaining systematic computer and hard files for each donor.
    • Overseeing and implementing regular correspondence with all major donors (including meetings, special events, lunches, house parties, phone calls, donor media packets, donor reports, etc.).
    • Managing annual major donor event, "Human Rights Awards" including supervision of dinner committee, team of staff, interns and consultants; and other major donor events, giving "clubs"; Attends key community events.
    • Developing and implementing a successful prospecting/donor outreach plan targeting New York and Los Angeles (and other targets as appropriate).
    • Staffing the board of director's Planned Giving/Endowment Committee and implementing a planned giving strategy.
    • Partnering with Membership coordinator to elevate higher membership level gifts
    • Managing and deepen our Global Exchange Monthly Sustainer program, (GEMS) in collaboration with the Membership Coordinator.
    • Writing/coordinating with a consultant 4 annual appeals and managing an acquisition strategy.
    • Strategic organizational leader: working with campaigners to develop donor savvy campaign materials and pitches; leadership role in strategic development of organization and department of development.
    Global Exchange devotes staff time to raising awareness among staff about issues of privilege and diversity and how these issues affect our work environment and our campaigns. We seek candidates who have an openness to engaging these issues and a commitment to incorporating an analysis of privilege and different forms of oppression into their work.

    This is a full time, salaried position. This position pays $40-45,000 DOE, with full medical and dental benefits.
