Stephen Zunes
Stephen Zunes, a long time peace and human rights activist, has emerged as one of the most forceful and articulate critics of U.S. policy in the Middle East. Dr. Zunes serves as Middle East editor for the Foreign Policy in Focus Project and was their senior policy analyst during his 2001-2002 sabbatical year. He also serves an associate editor of Peace Review and as a research associate at the Center for Global, International and Regional Studies at the University of California--Santa Cruz. He has held previous research positions at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington and the Institute for Global Security Studies in Seattle. In 1995, he received an NEH fellowship at Dartmouth College on the study of Middle Eastern and Central Asian politics and culture and, in 1992, was a Joseph J. Malone Fellow in Arab and Islamic Studies. Between 1991 and 1995, he served as founding director of the Institute for a New Middle East Policy and has served as a board member of a number of peace and human rights organizations. . Zunes has presented numerous lectures and conference papers in the United States and over a dozen foreign countries. He is active in several professional organizations, including the governing council of the International Peace Research Association. He has traveled frequently to the Middle East and other conflict regions and has served as a political analyst for National Public Radio and Pacifica Radio, the British Broadcasting Corporation and MSNBC, and has appeared as well on numerous television and radio talk shows. He has published scores of articles in academic journals, anthologies, magazines, and newspaper op-ed pages on topics such as U.S. foreign policy, Middle Eastern politics, Latin American politics, social movements and nonviolent action. He was principal editor of Nonviolent Social Movements (Blackwell Publishers, 1999) and is the author of the highly-acclaimed Tinderbox: U.S. Middle East Policy and the Roots of Terrorism (Common Courage Press, 2002). He is currently completing a book on the conflict in the Western Sahara to be published by Syracuse University Press. Stephen Zunes is an associate professor of Politics and chair of the Peace & Justice Studies Program at the University of San Francisco. He has been with the department since 1995 following previous faculty positions at Ithaca College, Whitman College, and the University of Puget Sound. A native of North Carolina, he received his B.A. from Oberlin College, his M.A. from Temple University, and his Ph.D. from Cornell University. Dr. Zunes enjoys running, hiking and bicycling, and participated in the 2002 California AIDS ride between San Francisco and Los Angeles. He has performed solo and in ensembles in a variety of musical styles, and is an avid fan of the University of North Carolina basketball team. He lives in a cohousing community in Santa Cruz with his wife Nanlouise Wolfe, who serves on the staff of the Resource Center for Nonviolence, and their children Shanti (14), Kalila (11), and Tobin (9).
