Summer 2010 Internship Positions

Our summer interns work closely with program staff on campaigns and programs and are expected to bring some knowledge and experience to the organization. Interns should be able to offer at least 20 hours per week for 3 months, and be eager to participate in all aspects of their department. This includes campaign strategizing, mailings, outreach phone calls/emails, event organizing, and research.

Global Exchange devotes staff time to raising awareness among staff about issues of privilege and diversity and how these issues affect our work environment and our campaigns. We seek candidates who have an openness to engaging these issues and a commitment to incorporating an analysis of privilege and different forms of oppression into their work.

Latin America Reality Tours
Global Exchange's Latin America Reality Tours Program seeks to educate citizens of the Global North about the dynamic changes occurring within Latin America by shifting knowledge beyond the headlines and creating people-to-people ties with communities, organizations and individuals. Aiming to mobilize citizens in changing US foreign policy towards the region, the program foregrounds human rights within a framework of sustainable development and environmental justice. The delegations endeavor to foment lasting solidarity between Global North and South citizens and to increase participation in movements against corporate globalization and toward the creation of a more economically just hemisphere.

Responsibilities:

Cuba/South American Reality Tours
Global Exchange's Cuba/South American Reality Tours seeks to expand knowledge of life and events in Cuba, Peru and Argentina, and to promote responsible travel to those nations. We endeavor to send as many people as possible to learn about the reality of life in Cuba despite Washington's more than 40-year economic blockade against that tiny nation.

We organize delegations to Argentina to examine worker-run collectives that arose after Argentina's economic and social collapse after decades of neo-liberal economic policies promoted by Washington and the IMF and World Bank, as well as to experience that South American nation's rich cultural heritage.

Global Exchange is currently organizing delegations to Peru to examine among other issues, human trafficking as well as to experience breathtaking scenery and an ancient culture.

Interns will learn to:

  • Promote trips
  • Develop flyers and announcements

Green Festival – San Francisco Regional Coordinator Intern
The San Francisco Outreach Coordinator is an unpaid internship and will report directly to the San Francisco Regional Director in San Francisco and the National Volunteer Director in Asheville, North Carolina but will work out of San Francisco, CA. The SF Outreach Coordinator will implement on-the-ground outreach directed at drawing in attendees and volunteers to the spring Green Festival in San Francisco. Pre-event Responsibilities:
  • Place outreach materials (flyers, posters, post cards, program guides) through the city and region to promote the festival, attract attendees, and recruit volunteers for the festival.
  • Identify and attend outreach events, make phone calls, send e-mails, and visit universities, groups, and other non-profit organizations as part of your outreach efforts.
  • Coordinate distribution of festival and volunteer materials & flyers for Green Festival with Regional Director and National Volunteer Director.
On-site Operational Management:
  • Assist National Volunteer Director with volunteer management and setup needs in days leading up to the event.
  • Assist National Volunteer Director with staff and volunteer management throughout the entire event.
  • Work with other onsite event staff and managers to oversee and direct volunteers.
  • Manage volunteer registration and facilitate the positioning of volunteers into assigned areas.
  • Provide on-site training of staff and volunteers throughout the event.
Post Event Responsibilities:
  • Assist with thank you letters and volunteer appreciation post event.
  • Finalize work, organize files and emails, and prepare information for next year.
Required Skill, Experience and Knowledge:
  • Grassroots outreach and volunteer recruitment experience in the Bay Area is preferred; connectivity within the community and a working knowledge of valuable outreach and recruiting methods; willingness to distribute flyers throughout the city and surrounding region; willingness to attend recruiting and outreach events; ability to work independently with little supervision;
  • Willingness to work cooperatively with Regional Director and National Volunteer Director outreach efforts and in securing volunteers for the Green Festival and providing on-site and post event support to National Volunteer Director.




Global Exchange Fair Trade Store- San Francisco
In the San Francisco Fair Trade Store we work to support Fair Trade, the equitable and fair partnership between global marketers and producers around the world, through: (1) the purchase of Fair Trade goods produced by low-income artisans and farmers; (2) the promotion of this product through solid merchandizing and sales; and (3) the education of consumers on their buying power and the importance of economic accountability in the system of world trade. Our summer internship program will focus on:
  • Learning the basics of Fair Trade production and distribution
  • Familiarity with Fair Trade product, vendors and producer groups
  • Outreach to Fair Trade vendors and customers in the planning of in-store events
  • Coordination with Global Exchange main office and a wide network of bay area non-profits in the promotion of these events.
  • Management of in-store events
  • Campaigning for the importance of Fair Trade in the context of world trade systems Supporting store staff in the daily tasks of running a retail outlet

Development Department:Fundraising Intern
Join Global Exchange's development team to learn the 'ins and outs' of fundraising and help build the progressive movement from the ground up. Work in a friendly office setting with our committed and experienced staff. The development department partners with all areas of the organization to raise the funds necessary to carry out the critical work of Global Exchange. Fundraising is widely considered the most marketable skill you can bring to a career in the non-profit sector. We are looking for talented, detail-oriented individuals who can commit to a minimum of 20 hours a week to bolster our fundraising efforts through event planning, research of prospective funders, editing and submission of grant proposals and database management. As a Fundraising Intern you will:
  • Become familiar with the inner workings of non-profit organizations
  • Learn event planning, database management and outreach skills
  • Develop promotional materials to build interest around the work of GX
  • Have the opportunity to attend events in the community to engage new members
  • Keep our existing members and donors informed on GX's work
  • Research and evaluate prospective foundation and individual donors
  • Learn the basics of donor relationship maintenance and correspondence, developing project budgets, and reporting deliverables
  • Edit/Proof and edit donor proposals, reports and appeals
  • Become familiar with the inner workings of non-profit organizations

Africa & Asia Reality Tours
The Africa/Asia Program Intern will help create or updates existing Africa and Asia Readers, compiling academic, GO, NGO and grassroots data about Tanzania, South Africa and the Asia destinations. Most importantly, you will help coordinate the logistics behind the development of the Africa and Asia Programs. Intern will acquire new skills in: outreach and marketing for potential delegates; when needed, make contact with international organizations supporting human rights, social justice and environmental sustainability; learn organizational skills; assist in and help with web maintenance and development; write letters & programs, documents as need, among other things. The ideal candidate will have a very deep passion for human rights,social/economic rights,sustainable and responsible tourism Multitasking abilities are essential. Multilingual & bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply but not necessary. Your creativity and self-development are essential while a quick and a sharp mind is a plus. This is a strong resume builder and a wonderful opportunity to tap into the non-profit and human rights sector.



Reality Tours Marketing & Outreach Internship
REALITY TOURS takes you to places in the news. The idea that travel can be educational and positively influence international affairs motivated the first Global Exchange Reality Tour in 1989. For over 15 years we have promoted alternative, educational travel as a way to replace feelings of apathy and helplessness with a deeper understanding and sense of empowerment. Reality Tours now sends over 1,000 delegates each year to over 30 countries. Within a strong framework of socially responsible travel, our travel delegations inspire individuals to become advocates of social and environmental justice. We hope citizens of the Global North will recognize their own capacity and responsibility to impact US foreign policy and commit to social change. As an outreach and marketing intern you will:
  • Design and create e-newsletters related to upcoming Reality Tours delegations
  • Conduct trip-specific and thematic outreach and marketing
  • Assist in the creation of a range of marketing and outreach documents and materials
  • Process and respond to feedback from previous RT participants
  • Manage and update trip data and descriptions on the RT website
  • Provide assistance as needed to RT regional program coordinators
  • Represent Reality Tours at relevant events and festivals
  • Perform administrative duties as needed, including data entry, assisting in RT mailings, and general office organization
INTERNS WILL LEARN:
  • Professional skills in a fast-paced, non-profit work environment
  • Writing, editing and web design skills relevant to marketing and outreach work.
  • How to work independently with input from a variety of staff members
  • An in depth understanding of social justice issues in RT destinations all over the world
  • What it means to organize and participate in socially-responsible travel
REQUIREMENTS & EXPECTATIONS:
  • Ability to commit to 8-16 hours per week, for 3 months minimum

CODEPINK Women for Peace – Campaigns Support (SF, LA and DC offices)
CODEPINK is seeking interns who are enthusiastic and passionate about ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, ending the Israeli occupation of Palestine and lifting the siege of Gaza, and creating a world of peace, compassion and equality. By interning in our office, you'll learn the basics of grassroots organizing from outreach to publicity to fundraising. Working in close collaboration with the CODEPINK national staff, your tasks may include: phonebanking, data entry, creating posters, fliers, research, updating the website; attending meetings, rallies, demonstrations, press conferences; participating in national staff conference calls. This is an internship for someone who likes being in the streets, getting behind the scenes, taking on leadership, and being self-reliant and independently responsible. Skills needed: Knowledge of how to use an Apple computer (or bring your own laptop), Microsoft Office, decent writing and editing, comfort talking with new people, passion for ending war. Our fall campaign work will particularly focus on coordinating a US campus speaking tour featuring the Shministiot, two Israeli women who refused to serve in the army; research assistance for a photo book on CODEPINK's seven years of activism; an October action marking the anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan; and local creative direct actions to link war funding, the environment, and domestic needs. The Chevron Program
The Chevron Program is looking for Fall interns to support Director, Antonia Juhasz. Interns can work either in the office or virtually. They should be prepared to work a minimum of 8 hours per week. They will provide research, outreach, web, and office support. They will be instructed in all aspects of the Program and will be encouraged to participate in all Program activities. Advanced research skills a plus. Experience with issues related to the oil industry, corporate organizing, environmental justice, climate change, and activist organizing experience a plus. Community Justice Organizing: Placing the rights of Communities and Nature Above Corporations
From water withdrawl to mining, GMOs and refineries, the corporate few weild the law against our communities, endangering our heath, safety and the environment. WE CAN ChANGE THAT! A new framework is emerging: Rights-based organizing! Confronted by corporate harms, more than 120 communities have decided to do something different, enacting cutting edge laws that place the rights of communities and nature above the claimed "rights" of corporations. This organizing stems from a new understanding about the origins of corporate power, learned in Democracy School. Now taught in 23 states, this empowering weekend-long training teaches dramatic new ways of confronting the power and rights used by corporations to deny the rights of people and nature. Communities across the US have utilized these lessons to stop working defensively against the corporate harms and take courageous action to assert their rights to make governing decisions where they live! The community justice intern will engage in the following activities:

  • Assist in empowering communities to challenge corporate power and establish community self-rule
  • Help manage, prepare and participate in upcoming San Francisco-based (and potentially other CA) Democracy Schools
  • Research CA community struggles against unwanted corporate projects and assaults as well as research around laws, and the rights of nature
  • Outreach: Be a point of entry and ongoing contact to local communities to inform them of our unique approach and establish connections for possible organizing state wide, and work with GX staff to help organize communities throughout the state
  • organize and schedule speaking and media opportunities
  • manage rights-based website and develop and manage a growing listserv and databse of contacts research for publication in journals and media placement, with the potential for some writing including the GX newsletter, conducting interviews and other opportunities
  • design flyers and outreach materials
  • Otherwise support this cutting edge work with other duties as assigned based on skill set, and your goals!
The community justice intern will learn/hone the following skills:
  • essential community organizing skills including identifying and breaking ground with potential new community activist partners, and actual on the ground organizing
  • through participation in weekend-long training, "democracy school" and via other avenues, learn about the basis of rights-based organizing including learning the history of corporate power, about people's movements for RIGHTS; and the cutting edge work started through rights-based organizing to recognize the rights of nature (which has now become the basis for Ecuador's constitutional rights of nature provision)
  • research and writing, learn to design outreach materials
  • learn about local, state and federal law in the process of developing cutting edge ordinances that deny corporations' constitutional "rights" learn (or broaden) your skills at developing and managing web and list serv content much much more!



Reality Tours department intern

We hope citizens of the Global North will recognize their own capacity and responsibility to impact US foreign policy and commit to social change.

The Reality Tours department intern will primarily focus on planning our annual Scholarship Fundraiser. This annual fundraiser is put on to raise funds for our scholarship fund which enables low income communities and youth the ability to experience a Reality Tour.

Intern will:

  • Solicit donations of food, drinks, auction/raffle prizes and funds for the fundraiser
  • Create a flyer for the event
  • Work on electronic outreach
  • Put together the entertainment for the event: DJ, performers, speakers, etc
  • Community outreach
  • Day of event planning and organizing
You will learn: The in's and out's of planning a non-profit fundraising event, you will learn about socially conscious travel, you will learn how to do outreach and you will learn how to network within your community to not only get them involved with the event but to get various businesses and individuals involved with the organization.



Green Alternatives Department: Grind for the Green
Green Alternatives Department: Grind for the Green

Grind for the Green is a 4 part eco-music festival produced by youth for youth in the Bay Area. The goal of Grind for the Green is to provide a culturally relevant organizing approach to engaging people of color into the growing green economy. We are currently seeking 2 interns to assist with event coordination, youth trainings, internet research, phone calls and assisting in the production of a solar powered hip-hop concert.




Fair Trade Campaign Internship at Global Exchange
Global Exchange is a San Francisco based human rights organization working for economic and social justice and democracy. Our Fair Trade program educates the public about Fair Trade and campaigns for corporate sourcing of Fair Trade commodities.

The Fair Trade cocoa campaign will be continuing its work on three major initiatives: (1) outreach to teachers, schools, unions, school districts, parents, etc to arrange for Global Exchange's Fair Trade cocoa curriculum to be taught in hundreds of schools nationwide (2) developing a national network of parents and children advocating for Fair Trade and (3) a corporate campaign asking World's Finest Chocolate, Inc., to start selling a Fair Trade chocolate bar. Our Fair Trade internships give interns substantial responsibility for parts of our Fair Trade program. We are looking for self-starters with strong skills, to whom we can offer an exceptional internship opportunity with strong resume-building potential.

Intern projects may include:

  • conduct research
  • outreach by phone, email and in-person to engage activists in GX economic justice campaigns outreach to journalists to inform them about important developments on GX economic justice campaigns create materials on economic justice issues such as fact sheets, campaign postcards, teaching materials, flyers, press releases and web pages
  • update and maintain sections of the GX website (no knowledge of HTML required)
  • participate in campaign planning and brainstorming meetings
  • other administrative duties, as needed

Internships are likely to be project oriented. Interns will be responsible for managing programs like Global Exchange's Reverse Trick-or-Treating and Christmas Caroling initiatives. Through Reverse Trick-or-Treating, thousands of children nationwide go door to door on their normal trick-or-treating neighborhood rounds, but also hand chocolate back to adults....Fair Trade chocolate attached to an informational piece about problems in the conventional cocoa industry. Christmas caroling is a similar initiative, in which community groups Christmas Carol for Fair Trade in their communitiesInterns may also help with our Sweet Smarts initiative, to build a national network of children and parents who advocate for Fair Trade in their communities. In your cover letter, please describe any experience you may have in areas directly related to our campaign projects, such as Fair Trade, Africa, outreach to faith groups, work in the "foodie"/coffee/chocolate or education communities, and grassroots organizing. Please include a brief writing sample in your application, preferably something you have prepared for a grassroots advocacy campaign and contact information for several references



Global Exchange Media and Communications
Global Exchange is seeking an intern who is enthusiastic about written and verbal communication to be our Communications Intern. You'll learn how to get the media and the public's attention for issues ranging from the anti-war movement to Fair Trade to the Green Economy. Working in close collaboration with the Communications Team, including the Web Content Manager, Social Media Director and Development Director. Your tasks will include:
  • writing press releases and public service announcements;
  • calling reporters to "pitch" news stories and events;
  • writing articles for the Global Exchange newsletter and various websites;
  • updating the Global Exchange website (no HTML skills required);
  • assisting in the website overhaul project;
  • interacting with various Social Media channels to outreach and increase awareness and support Global Exchange news, events, and updates;
  • assist with Global Exchange e-mail blasts;
  • administrative tasks such as tracking and filing Global Exchange media hits; and more.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are required as is a high level of interest in GX's mission of promoting social, economic and environmental justice around the world. An interest in media activism and independent media is definitely a plus.
