The following jobs are available:

Freedom from Oil
The campus arm of Freedom from Oil focuses on passing sustainable transportation and climate policies and programs in schools. Car and truck sales from institutional buyers such as cities and universities account for about one-fifth of all auto sales in the U.S. By changing the purchasing policies of these institutions, we can help shift the entire auto industry toward a more sustainable way of doing business. A greenfleets policy includes commitments to alternative modes of transportation such as walking, biking, riding the bus and carpooling, etc.

We ask our educational institutions to buy the most fuel-efficient vehicles available on the market. This means purchasing alternatively fueled cars and trucks such as Plug-in Electric Vehicles (EV's) and hybrids. It also means calling on fleet buyers to set a floor standard for the fuel economy of their vehicles of 40 miles per gallon, place "soft-orders" and write to major auto manufacturers about providing these choices.

This is part of the Campus Climate Challenge, which is coordinated out of the Energy Action Coalition. The Campus Climate Challenge is a project of more than 30 leading youth organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada uniting young people to organize to win climate policies at their schools. The Challenge is growing a generation-wide movement to stop global warming and lead our society to a just, clean energy future.

Interns will:

  • Outreach and follow-up with California campuses
  • Help recruit and coordinate for a national youth climate conference and actions
  • Research campus transportation programs and administration
  • Update Greenfleets policy template with current information
  • Update the webpage
  • Administrative duties as needed: database entries, spreadsheets, copies, etc.

Interns will learn:

  • How to coordinate multiple campuses and campaigns

  • The inner workings of a non-profit work environment

Green Workforce Development Program, Green Festivals, and the Global Citizen Center
Interns will Learn:
  • About the emerging green economy and get an insider perspective on the major ideas, projects, and players within the movement;
  • How to organize green education and job training projects;
  • How to organize a major event and coordinate a volunteer program involving thousands of participants;
  • What is involved in the management of a large real estate project.

Green Workforce Development Our Green Workforce Development program has three stages: (1) our Green Guardians program trains inner city high school youth in green neighborhood development skills; (2) our Green Careers courses at San Francisco City College take students the next step to prepare them to be CEOs (Chief Environmental Officers) for the green companies we know through our production of the Green Festivals, and (3) our Green Apprenticeships and job placement with these same companies help youth find secure careers in the green economy.

Green Festivals Green Festivals are large green economy events that take place in Seattle, April 12-13, 2008; Chicago, May 17-18, 2008; Washington, D.C., November 8-9, 2008; San Francisco, November 14-16, 2008. These weekend events bring together 350 green companies, dozens of activist organizations, more than 100 speakers, 12 organic vegetarian food vendors, diverse live music, and tens of thousands of attendees. By exposing the general public to the entire green economy in one place, and providing hands-on education about the necessary changes we need to make in our economy and lifestyles, we help accelerate the transition to the nature-friendly economy of the future. Interns help with recruiting more than 900 volunteers who work the event, outreach and promotion of the event, management of speakers, and other administrative tasks associated with organizing a large event.

Global Citizen Center We are developing a building in downtown San Francisco that will have these main components:

  • A retail/wholesale ecomall (GreenMart) that will be a hybrid of a green everything store (based on our experience with GreenFestivals.org) and an Exploratorium style learning center on the green economy (complete with food court—café/restaurant/organic brewpub);
  • Offices rented or owned by nonprofit environmental and social justice groups and foundations that will help market the GreenMart, and share infrastructure (photocopying, cooperative purchasing of supplies, exercise room with stationary bikes and rowing machines that generate electricity, etc.). We have recruited 90,000 sq.ft. of office tenants so far (Mother Jones, Global Exchange, SF Dept. of the Environment, TransFairUSA, New Leaf Paper, Blue Water Network, Vanguard Foundation, and many more).
  • Activity space for conferences, and special events, with a state-of-the-art recording booth for radio stations to broadcast live cultural performances and promote the address. The groups renting offices will promote the ground-floor GreenMart in their extensive outreach materials because:
  • Affordable housing for teachers and other city workers (first responders, mass transit workers, and city health service workers). These workers have trouble affording the expensive housing in San Francisco and providing affordable housing, especially for teachers working in nearby schools, will help San Francisco strengthen its educational system.
We are developing this social enterprise as a model that can be replicated in other cities, under local control, where we act as consultants and advisors but local people own and control each Global Citizen Center, with the long-term goal being to create a global network that can lead the transition to a new set of values for the global economy.

Mexico Human Rights Program
Global Exchange Mexico Human Rights program seeks volunteer interns in San Francisco, Washington, DC, and Mexico City.

These three exciting volunteer posts are a unique opportunity to get involved with and support a cross border effort to stimulate thinking and discussion about the root causes of migration in the context of the larger immigration reform debate. This program works to encourage policymakers and social leaders in both the United States and Mexico to play a leadership role on this issue, and to nurture the best bi-national thinking on a possible new way forward.

San Francisco:

Project support and Speaking Tour Coordination (January -- April, 2008)

This San Francisco based position will be focused on supporting and coordinating a national speaking tour across the United States by experts representing Canadian, US, and Mexican organizations in late-winter and early spring of 2008.

The volunteer intern will work closely with both the program director and the program associate who will be supervising the speaking tour project. The work will involve direct support for organizing events across the US with labor, religious, immigrant rights, student, business, fair trade, environmental, and other community groups—especially those with an active stake in trade and immigration issues.

The tour will provide information and tools to address the indisputable links between deeply flawed continental trade and economic policies and accelerated Mexican migration to the US as well as the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP), or "NAFTA plus," being forged between the leading corporations and executive branches of Canada, the US, and Mexico without approval— or even genuine consultation— with the legislative branches or general public in any of the three countries.

Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer and internet literate (Macintosh)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
  • Prior organizing experience and a working knowledge of Mexico-U.S. relations are helpful for this position.
  • Some event organizing experience

    The position is both demanding and rewarding and begins in January 2008. 4-5 months, minimum 15 hours/week.

    Washington, DC

    We are seeking a highly motivated volunteer with a strong commitment to social justice as well as basic knowledge of Mexican affairs, immigration, and trade policy. Strong written and verbal skills and basic computer literacy are required. Spanish fluency and translation skills are a plus.

    The position is both demanding and rewarding and begins in January 2008. 4-5 months, minimum 15 hours/week.

    Mexico DF

    Project support and congressional work on trade and migration policies (January -- April, 2008)

    This Mexico City based position will focus on supporting the program's Mexico Policy Liaison, Dwight Dyer, by helping to coordinate advocacy and education efforts in Mexico. The intern will help with congressional outreach to members with committee positions relevant to immigration, trade, and relations with the United States. S/he will also assist with media work and with the production of the Mexico Program's short book on alternatives to current trade and migration policies.

    The position is both demanding and rewarding and begins in January 2008. 4-5 months, minimum 15 hours/week.

  • Venezuela Program Book Project
    Global Exchange's Venezuela program seeks to educate citizens of the Global North about the dynamic changes occurring in Venezuela and move their knowledge beyond the headlines. The Venezuela program is producing a book consisting of a collection of interviews with activists and leaders from a cross-section of Venezuelan social movements currently influencing the profound political changes taking place within the country. The book begins from the premise that with an excessive focus on President Chavez, the crucial role that independent social movements are playing in determining the direction of social change in Venezuela is largely ignored. By allowing the people of Venezuela to speak for themselves, the book will reveal the complexities and debates dominating this moment in a manner that no single author alone could ever provide.

    Working in collaboration with the editors, the intern will support key aspects of developing this book project. The location of the intern is not of major importance. The intern must simply have access to the internet.

    • Strong writing skills
    • Experience in doing research
