Fire crew douses small fire at Chevron refinery
A plume of smoke visible Tuesday afternoon at El Segundo's Chevron refinery was traced to a fire on the seal of an above-ground tank, officials said.
A refinery fire crew responded about 1:30 p.m. to the tank that holds sour, processed water in the center of the site, Chevron spokesman Rod Spackman said.
The incident also caused "a bit of an odor nuisance" for a brief time, he said.
City officials from El Segundo, whose Fire Department was called for backup, said the seal encircling the tank's floating roof is designed to prevent vapors from escaping.
Crews were applying a water/foam mixture to the seal to extinguish the fire, characterized by the city as "relatively small."
