Oil Expert Available to Speak on High Oil and Gasoline Prices, Record Industry Profits

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

Antonia Juhasz, author of Black Tide and The Tyranny of Oil warns that oil and gasoline prices likely to rise without regulation of speculation and concentration and without significant investments in alternative energy.

Antonia Juhasz, leading oil industry expert and author is available to speak about the escalating cost of gasoline at the pump, rising oil prices and record profits announced this week by the world’s largest oil corporations.

Juhasz is an expert in all aspects of oil and energy policy. She can address:

Why are gasoline and oil prices escalating?
Who is driving and who benefits from speculation in the oil futures market?
What can we expect in coming months and years?
Will drilling more in the U.S. bring lower prices or greater “energy security”?
What role does unrest in the Middle East have on rising prices?
How can speculation be curtailed?
How do gasoline prices work?
Why are Big Oil's profits so large and why should we care?
How has campaign spending by oil companies increased and how is this likely to affect public policy/policies to contain prices?

Juhasz has said, “The market is 'correcting' itself back to where it was in 2008 prior to the financial collapse. Because there has been no change in the underlying regulation that allowed speculators to drive prices in 2008, those same forces are at work today. Rising gasoline prices at home and also due to concentration in the refining and marketing sectors. Given that we are producing more oil today in the U.S. than we were at this same time last year, while prices were much lower for both oil and gasoline at that time, drilling more oil in the U.S. will not lower prices. We need greater regulation of oil futures markets, greater taxation on oil and gasoline, greater regulation of and competition in the U.S. refining and marketing sectors, and a massive investment in public transportation and alternative fuels to get us off the oil roller coaster altogether.”
