UN condemns Cuba embargo for the 13th time

For the 13th consecutive year, the United Nations General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly against the United States's four-decade-old economic, financial and commercial embargo against Cuba.

The vote was 179 to 4, with one abstention, with only the United States, Israel, Palau and the Marshall Islands voting against the measure.

Cuba has been under a US trade and travel embargo since Fidel Castro defeated a CIA-backed assault at the Bay of Pigs in 1961.

Australia joined other traditional US allies - including Japan, Canada, and members of the European Union - in supporting the resolution.

The United States says Cuba is not a victim of the embargo but has also rejected any kind of economic reforms that would improve the life of its people.
