For 30 years the US has sought to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear technology, while Iran has systematically developed this capability. This nuclear research program, Iran insists, is purely peaceful, meant only for legitimate civilian electricity production, while the US and Israel along with others in the international community firmly believe there is a secret military objective to produce a nuclear weapon. According to Investigative Journalist Gareth Porter, this perception of Iran’s intentions is based on false assumptions and faulty intelligence. Assessments of Iranian nuclear weapons ambitions have shaped the policy of successive US administrations and prevented any negotiations. Current efforts by the Obama administration to negotiate a solution, Porter suggests, are also based on these false assumptions—a fact which Porter believes could threaten the outcome of these talks.
