Venezuela : Fall Semester Study Abroad in Mérida, Venezuela

Global Exchange's Fall/Spring Semester Study Abroad in Mérida, Venezuela is a 12-week academic program designed to increase students' knowledge of contemporary Venezuelan society and build bridges between advocates of social justice in the global North and like-minded activists in Latin America.

The program is built around intensive Spanish language training; courses focused on Venezuelan history, culture, and politics; and exchanges with community leaders involved in social change on the ground. Participants have the opportunity to earn 15 undergraduate or graduate credits while engaging with contemporary and alternative development issues both inside and outside the classroom.

Program Highlights:

  • The 12 week program gives students a one of a kind opportunity to study Spanish and learn about the history and reality of contemporary Venezuelan society. Participants have the unique chance to take classes at the prestigious Universidad de Los Andes and to meet with community activists leading change in the following areas: health care, education, popular economy, community media, the women's movement and agriculture. Participants will also have the chance to meet with and understand the positions taken by the country's active opposition movement.

Cost: $8,175

Price Includes:

  • Tuition and enrollment
  • Lodging and three meals a day with host family
  • Transportation Caracas-Merida-Caracas
  • International health and emergency insurance
  • Transportation, lodging and meals during weekend trips
  • Interpretation services for group meetings (when necessary)

How to Register:

Application Steps
  1. Schedule a meeting with your study abroad and/or academic adviser to guarantee recognition of the credits you will be earning while abroad. Download the Program Overview to take with you to this meeting and complete the Participation Approval Form with your advisor's signature.
  2. After receiving approval to participate in the program, download the Application Form and submit it to Global Exchange by June 15th for the Fall program and November 15th for the Spring program. A $30 non-refundable application fee is required for all candidates.
  3. Upon receipt of the application and payment of the application fee, your application will be reviewed and you may be contacted by Global Exchange for a phone interview.
  4. If accepted into the program, a letter outlining your offer and the next steps that need to be taken will be sent. All outstanding documentation and a non-refundable down payment of $400 will be due to ensure your spot in the program. Final payment is due August 1st for the Fall program and January 1st for the Spring program.
