Cuba : III Int'l Conference on Science and the Environment

Participants on this delegation, through the conference and through additional activities, will learn about various aspects of natural resource management in Cuba, and discuss controversial issues of sustainable development with other international participants.

The conference will take place at the principal university in the province of Villa Clara. Home to the revolutionary movements of Che Guevara, this province today boasts of a growing economy in light manufacturing, as well as in agricultural diversification. Watershed management and alternative energy resources, namely biogas and photovoltaic, will be the primary focus of site visits during our time in Villa Clara.

Program Highlights:

  • Participation in the conference, with individual attention to professional needs and interests.
  • Visit to Las Terrazas intentional community and reforestation project in the Sierra Rosario Bioreserve, Pinar del Rio Province
  • Meet with directors of the Metropolitan Park Project working to clean up the Almendares River and Havana's urban watershed.
  • Visit neighborhood food markets and urban gardens in and around Havana.
  • Visit Havana's Scale Model of the City and meet top architects and urban planners to learn of efforts to involve communities in local, sustainable decision-making.
  • Visit a rural solar installation and learn of the efforts of the Cuban NGO Cubasolar to promote renewable energies throughout the island.
  • City tour of Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Be introduced to Cuban dance and music during nighttime programmed activities

Deposits are non-refundable but transferable for up to one year toward the cost of another tour. Payments by check, Mastercard or Visa are welcome.
