Kenya : World Social Forum

January 13, 2007 - January 26, 2007

Nairobi, Kenya will be the host for the World Social Forum (WSF), and it is the first time in history to be held on the African continent. Global Exchange invites you to join our delegation to the WSF for a chance to learn about Kenya and Africa through the eyes of its people, grassroots organizations, and from activists joining us from all around the world. The World Social Forum, first held in Porto Allegre Brazil in 2001, challenges economic and political agendas as promoted by the World Economic Forum and its programs of neoliberalism, privatization, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund.

Kenya is an East African country of more than 30 million people that borders the Indian Ocean and the politically important countries of Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, and Uganda. The history of Kenya and the impact of colonialism offer an opportunity to learn about the successes and the struggles African countries have faced since the era of independence. The Kenya hosting of the WSF follows the distinctive African Social Forums that have been held between 2002-2006 in Mali, Ethiopia, and Guinea.

The Global Exchange delegation will arrive one week before the start of the WSF for educational meetings and events. We will meet with NGO's that are promoting sustainable community programs, urban development, women's rights, elders who can share the history of Kenya, and learn from Fair Trade movements first hand. The delegation will also meet with young people who are creating art, music, and community organizations to reshape their dreams. Once the WSF in Nairobi begins, our Global Exchange team will provide you with reading materials, organize special orientations, and ensure that you have every opportunity to bring the words and the visions of the World Social Forum back to your community.

This is an important time to experience the role that Africa is playing in making "another world possible." The Global Exchange delegation to the World Social Forum is a unique opportunity to participate in an international gathering designed to challenge a world economic model that has generated underdevelopment, civil war, debt, and global apartheid.

We look forward to seeing you in Kenya in January 2007!
