South Africa : Celebrating Pride! Queer Mother City Festival and South Africa's Progressive Queer Politics

December 11, 2009 - December 22, 2009

Come Join us and discover how South Africa has become one of the leading models of Queer Rights in the world by legally recognizing the fundamental, undiscriminating right to marriage!

With one of the most progressive Constitutions in the world and laws on the books which recognize gay marriage, South Africa stands as a leader in human rights and equality for LGBTI people.
It is a haven for gays and lesbians on the Continent because the country recognizes peoples fundamental right to love, respect and sexual expression. But the struggle has not been easy.
On this trip, participants will learn about the many battles fought in the courts and in private, in order to gain basic civil rights. Despite the brilliant legislation that guides the country, the story for gay and lesbian equality looks very different on the ground.
How are people surviving day to day? You will meet with activists and some of their organizations that monitor enforcement of equality legislation and are organizing for LGBTI rights.

Finally, the delegation will have a chance to Celebrate Pride with the biggest costume party east of Rio--the Mother City Queer Party. This is one of the biggest gay and lesbian events in South Africa. Like Pride marchers around the world, flamboyant and witty costumes are the order of the day.
