Cuba : Fiesta del Fuego

July 02, 2010 - July 12, 2010

We invite you to join a research delegation in Havana and Santiago de Cuba on Cuban Art and Culture, that takes place during the annual Caribbean Festival, Fiesta del Fuego, (Festival of Fire) in Santiago on Cuba's lush and mountainous east coast.

Artists, musicians, dancers, cultural anthropologists, and professionals involved in all fields of Latin American culture are welcome to join the research delegation.

The itinerary will include meetings, both in Havana and in Santiago de Cuba, with artists in their studios, dance events, musical events and meetings with Cuban anthropologists and cultural historians. There will also be time for your own individual research.

Fiesta del Fuego is a lively, week-long celebration of the music, dance and other cultural aspects of each of the countries in the Caribbean; each year the festival is dedicated to one a particular country. The highlight of the festival is the parade, in which each country participates.

Santiago de Cuba, the second largest city in Cuba, considered "the first city of the revolution," is a town with a history of popular insurgency that long predates Fidel Castro's revolution. Like all good revolutionaries, the Santiaguerros know how to throw a good party.

The Fiesta del Fuego offers many opportunities to research Cuban and Caribbean culture:
  • all night music and dancing, both traditional and international, fueled by the throbbing rhythms of Cuban bands
  • processions of decorated vehicles and colorfully-attired dancers
  • all kinds of Caribbean food sold by street vendors (pork products are particularly popular)
  • beer and rum (bring your own receptacle - cups are not provided!)
The itinerary has not yet been finalized. We will spend three nights in Havana and the rest of the time in Santiago de Cuba, about an hour flying time from Havana. We will have both formal and informational meetings with Cuban officials, academics and artists and we will attend lectures and cultural performances.
