Chiapas: Anniversary of the Caracoles

Tentative Itinerary

DAY 1
  • Participants arrive to Chiapa de Corzo airport near Tuxtla Gutiérrez -- various arrival times.
  • Depart airport for San Cristóbal de Las Casas (about 1 hour).
  • Arrive at Casa Juana, place of lodging in San Cristóbal.
  • Dinner at El Papalote.

DAY 2

  • Morning: Breakfast at Casa Juana. Welcome and introductions.
  • Center for Economic and Political Investigation for Community Action to discuss free trade, neoliberalism, NAFTA.
  • Lunch at La Pera.
  • Discuss human rights situation and current political context in Chiapas at the Fray Bartolome de las Casas Human Rights Center.

DAY 3

  • Morning: Breakfast at Casa Juana.
  • Tour of Huitepec Bio Reserve outside San Cristóbal.
  • Lunch at TierrAdentro.
  • Afternoon: Visit a community home that works with single mothers and pregnant women for their autonomy and independence. Also, visit an artisan cooperative.
  • Open dinner.

DAY 4

  • Morning: Breakfast at Casa Juana.
  • Visit to a vocational training center for indigenous youth.
  • Lunch at La Luna Creciente.
  • Afternoon: Community prep meeting at Casa Juana. Then meet with representatives of Maderas del Pueblo to discuss environment and sustainable development in the region.
  • Open dinner.

DAY 5

  • Morning: Leave early for overnight community visits. Breakfast on the way.
  • Afternoon: Arrive in Nuevo Montes Azules, a "model community" of relocated bio reserve inhabitants. Meet with community members, tour community. Lunch in community or on the way.
  • Head on to the community of Nuevo Francisco Leon. Visit Center for Community Organization Xi'Nich, which defends communities from forced eviction.
  • Dinner in community and spend the night.

DAY 6

  • Morning: Breakfast in community. Meet with members from Xi'Nich.
  • Visit archaeological site Bonampak. Lunch on the way.
  • Afternoon: On to the community of Lacanjá Tzeltal.
  • Dinner in community and spend the night.

DAY 7

  • Morning: Breakfast in community. Meet with community members struggling to defend the environment and their right to land as traditional farmers.
  • Lunch in community.
  • Drive back to San Cristóbal.
  • Open dinner.

DAY 8

  • Morning: Breakfast at Casa Juana and morning free.
  • Open lunch.
  • Meet with FOMMA, an indigenous women's art and theater group.
  • Dinner at Emiliano's Moustache.

DAY 9

  • Morning: Breakfast at Casa Juana.
  • Trip to the Maya Vinic coffee cooperative in the highlands.
  • Lunch in community.
  • Visit Acteal Sanctuary.
  • Return to San Cristóbal.
  • Open dinner.

DAY 10

  • Morning: Breakfast at Casa Juana and morning free.
  • Open lunch.
  • Afternoon: Debriefing with group.
  • Dinner as a group at Mayambe.

DAY 11

  • Breakfast at Casa Juana and depart for airport.
