Colac / MarCuba Congress Brochure

October 26-30,2009



We are pleased to announce that the Latin American Association of Marine Sciences Research (ALICMAR) and the Cuban National Oceanographic Committee (NOC) have agreed to organize their congresses COLACMAR and MARCUBA in Havana City from the 26th to the 30th of October, 2009. This double-congress, called ColacMarCuba 2009, will include the 13th Latin American Congress on Marine Sciences (COLACMAR) and the 8th Cuban Congress on Marine Sciences (MarCuba'2009). The venue of the meeting will be the Havana International Conference Center, Cuba.

ColacMarCuba 2009 will devote special attention to the central topic: "Marine Sciences: Integration for Development". The meeting is open to scientists and other professionals related to coastal and marine sciences, services and technologies, and to educators, sociologists, economists, businesspeople, and policy makers, among others.

Main Issues:
  • Integration for development: The role of Marine Sciences
  • Human impacts on the coastal zone and oceans
  • Climate change, natural disasters and marine ecosystems
  • Seas and Oceans as source of renewable energy
  • Marine biodiversity, connectivity and conservation
  • Biotechnology and Aquaculture
  • Management of marine mammals in controlled environments
Priority will be given to papers related to any specific field of coastal and marine sciences, services and technologies, environmental education, sociology, economy, and marine policy, which contribute to the solution of problems in the following topics:

  1. INTEGRATION FOR DEVELOPMENT: THE ROLE OF MARINE SCIENCES Policies, Synergies, Capacity, Building, Integration Mechanisms

  2. HUMAN IMPACTS ON THE COASTAL ZONE AND OCEANS Pollution, Coastal infrastructures, Land use changes, Fishery exploitation, Use of the water, Mining, Tourism, and Rehabilitation

  3. CLIMATE CHANGE, NATURAL DISASTERS AND MARINE ECOSYSTEMS Extreme events, Tsunamis, Coral bleaching and infectious diseases, Warning systems, Adaptation, Mitigation

  4. SEAS AND OCEANS AS A SOURCE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY Thermal conversion, Tides, Waves

  5. MARINE BIODIVERSITY, CONNECTIVITY AND CONSERVATION Larvae transport, Threatened species, Populations, Marine mammals, Invasive species, Resilience, Marine protected areas

  6. BIOTECHNOLOGY AND AQUACULTURE Culture of marine species, Marine bioactive substances, Release of juveniles (Stock Enhancement)

  7. MANAGEMENT OF MARINE MAMMALS IN CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENTS

ABSTRACTS

Abstracts shall be sent to the Organizing Committee, in digital format, before July 31st, 2009. They must not exceed 250 words, and must be written in Arial 12 points and in letter size paper. The presentation structure of abstracts is: Title, Author(s), Institution, Full Address, City and Country. ColacMarCuba 2009 Scientific Committee will inform you on the acceptance of the paper and its presentation modality. The non-acceptance of a work does not exclude the possibility for the applicant to attend the event as delegate. The Organizing Committee will inform later on about the publication of full papers in the Memories of the Congress. The Scientific Committee will define the modality of presentation of the papers, which will include master lectures and oral presentations to be presented in rooms or posters.

The working languages of ColacMarCuba 2009 will be Spanish and English. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided during plenary sessions, as well as in those rooms of greater thematic relevance.

EXPOSITION

In line with these congresses, a commercial scientific exhibition will take place in the "Grand Foyer" of the Havana International Conference Center, where institutions, research centers, companies and specialized firms will have an exceptional occasion to exhibit their results, equipment, materials, literature and other products related to the topic of the event.

The price of the assembled interior modular stand is 100.00 CUC per square meter with a minimum space of 9 square meters. This covers the whole exhibition period.
