General Itinerary for a tour to Brazil

This itinerary was for an ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK tour to Rio de Janeiro, both a popular destination and idea for college-aged students.

Day 1: Arrival

-Dinner "churrascaria"

Day 2:

-Arrive in the city of Campos dos Goytakazes, North of Rio de Janeiro with guide Marcelo Durão -Lunch Acampamento Paz na Terra -Assentamento Antonio de Farias,

Day 3:

-Breakfast Host made coffee and "aipim" -Activity Visited an industrial and a home "farinheira" farinheira: a place where they make flour from "mandioca" -Lunch -Visited a pre-settlement (a place where the families are camped but they already got the land, they are just waiting for the document from the government.) Meeting with the local leaders -Return Crossed the Assentamento Zumbi dos Palmares

Day 4:

-Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in the Incumbadora Tecnológica de Cooperativas Populares (ITCP). ITCP is a department of the university that gives support to new cooperatives organized inside the favelas until they are able to work independent. Coordinator: Paulo Lebutte -Lunch Botafogo Praia Shopping -Meeting with a group called GADIM -- Grupo de Ações e Direitos da Mulher

Day 5:

-Met with guide Heliana, coordinator of GADIM to go to the Favela Nova Holanda, this favela is part of the Complexo da Maré which forms the biggest favela complex of Rio de Janeiro. -Lunch Restaurant in the favela -Visited Santa Cruz with volunteers of the Pastoral da Criança Activity Visited parish, observed course in natural medicine. -Visisted Nova Sepetiba, housing project -Back in Rio, observed capoeira class with Mestre Camisa from Grupo Abadá.

Day 6:

-Met Aline Rocha, a social worker from ITCP at the Mental Illness Hospital Pinel. Visited food cooperative inside the hospital. -Activity Visited TV Pinel -Lunch at the University -Activity Santa Cruz, Visited a sewing cooperative of women Costurart -Activity Rioscenarium, danced to "chorinho" -Asa Branca, danced to "forró".

Day 7:

-Visit to Corcovado -- the Christ Redeemer -Pastoral da Criança and Sister Missai -Activity/Dinner Feira de São Cristóvão

Day 8:

-Debriefing. -Lunch Meeting -Departure
