THE GANDHIAN LEGACY
December 29 to January 12
(this is an annual tour - same dates each year)
DAY 1 - Dec. 29: Arrive Mumbai (formerly Bombay)
Arrival in Mumbai, the dynamic city of tycoons, skyscrapers, film studios and big business. After clearing customs, you will be met by a tour representative and transferred to the hotel.
DAY 2 - Dec. 30: Mumbai
Breakfast at the hotel. Orientation Meeting facilitated by Tour Leader, Dr. Arun Gandhi. Full day visit to the Women's India Trust (WIT), a city based women's organization that helps poor women earn a livelihood.
DAY 3 - Dec. 31: Mumbai - New Year Eve
After breakfast, boat tour to Elephanta Caves located on a small island about an hour's boat-ride from the impressive Gateway to India. Afternoon, city tour along the elegant arc-shaped Marine Drive, past the famous Chowpatty Beach, along Flora Fountain via legendary Victoria Terminus. An evening lecture by Tushar Gandhi on "Current Politics in India." New Year's Eve Dinner at the hotel.
DAY 4 - Jan. 1 : Mumbai to Sangli by overnight train.
Visit Mani Bhavan, Mahatma Gandhi's residence between 1915 and 1934. Free afternoon in Mumbai, board evening sleeper car train to the rural city of Sangli (south east of Mumbai). Overnight on-board train.
DAY 5 - Jan. 2: Sangli
Arrival in Sangli and check in to the hotel. After breakfast, visit the Verala Irrigation and Development Society project for women: housing, irrigation, agriculture, reforestation, etc. Lecture: "Grassroots Development in India" by Prof. Arun Chavan.
DAY 6 - Jan. 3: Sangli back to Mumbai by overnight train.
More field visits in Sangli, meetings with community groups and project leaders. Children's cultural performance. Overnight on train back to Mumbai.
DAY 7 - Jan. 4: Mumbai to Ahmedabad by overnight train.
On arrival at Mumbai railway station, group transfer to the hotel. Visit to Marketplace / Share, a fair trade textile cooperative and the Prince of Wales Museum. Afternoon lecture: "Principles of Non-Violence" by Dr. Arun Gandhi. After dinner, transfer to Mumbai central railway station to board the sleeper car train to Ahmedabad. Overnight on-board train.
DAY 8 - Jan. 5: Arrive Ahmedabad by train.
Arrival and transfer to hotel. Later visit the Sabarmati Ashram founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1918. Guided tour of the ashram, museum and projects. Evening program, "The Legacy of Gandhian Non-Violent Social Action" by Arun Gandhi.
DAY 9 - Jan. 6: Ahmedabad
After breakfast, visit the City Center and the Self - Employed Women's Association (SEWA), an organization, which works with rural and urban women on income generation. Dinner at the Vishala, an ethnic village resort.
DAY 10 - Jan. 7: Ahmedabad to Delhi by train.
Morning will be at leisure. Early afternoon: Dialogue Groups. Late afternoon, transfer to Ahmedabad railway station to board the train Ashram Express to Delhi. Overnight on train with packed dinner.
DAY 11 - Jan. 8: Arrive Delhi by train.
Transfer to the hotel. After wash and change, visit to the Raj Ghat (Mahatma Gandhi's Cremation and Memorial Ground), the Jama Masjid (The Universal Mosque), and The Red Fort (built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan). Later visit the Qutab Minar (a victory tower built about 800 years ago), and Emperor Humayun's Tomb. Drive past the India Gate, the Houses of the Parliament and the Presidential Palace.
DAY 12 - Jan. 9: Delhi to Agra by train. Agra back by private bus ('coach')
to Delhi Early morning, train in Chair Car to Agra. On arrival at Agra proceed to a city tour. Visit the Agra Fort, a standing testimony in red sandstone to the glory of the Great Mughals. Visit the famous Taj Mahal, poetry in marble and a symbol of eternal love. Late afternoon, the group will be driven back to Delhi.
DAY 13 - Jan. 10: Delhi to Dehradun by train.
Early morning the group will transfer to New Delhi railway station to board the train Shatabdi Express (in AC Chair Car) to Dehradun. On arrival at Dehradun transfer to hotel. Later visit the Dr. Vandana Siva Centre to see the day-to-day work at the centre.
DAY 14 - Jan. 11: Dehradun
Full day visit to the Dr. Vandana Shiva Centre.
DAY 15 - Jan. 12: Dehradun to Delhi by train.
Early morning train to Delhi and transfer to hotel. After wash and change proceed to visit the Salam Baalak Trust - Located in Paharganj, which works with children who live on the streets and women and children from slum communities. Evening transfers to the International Airport to board flights back home.

*Please Note: This tour has four nights of comfortable Second Class, Sleeper Car, over-night train trips (first class sleeper cars are prohibitively expensive for our tour price and are not on all trains). Second Class accommodation is a compartment with 4 bunk beds - 2 tiers, one on each side. For those who sign up for a single room, the extra cost of $400 does not include a private room on the train, only the 4-person compartment that all on the tour use (a private compartment on the train costs several hundred dollars per night, so is not an option). If you sign up for a single room, you will, of course, have a private room at all hotels for the remaining 10 nights.
