Palestine Fair Harvest

Tentative Itinerary



Day 1: Arrive Ben Gurion Airport Evening meeting and Global Exchange welcome Olive Harvest Briefing. Stay overnight at the Jerusalem Hotel or St. Georges Guesthouse

Day 2: Jerusalem Breakfast at the hotel Half-day briefing and tour with Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, focused on land, resources, water rights, tree destruction, house demolition and an economy paralyzed by occupation. Tour of the Old City. Visit with Sunbula Fair Trade, an organization working to promote a number of West Bank co-operatives. Dinner and overnight at the Jerusalem Hotel or St. Georges Guesthouse

Day 3: Bethlehem and Beit Sahour Breakfast at the hotel. Travel to Beit Sahour, learn about Bethlehem-area crafts at the fair trade Holy Land Handicraft Cooperative Society. Visit the Palestine Wildlife Society, and later meet with Palestinian Center for Rapprochement between People and hear about non-violent forms of resistance and their media project, IMEMC Tour the Old City of Bethlehem, walk along the Apartheid Wall and go through a checkpoint when leaving the city. Dinner and overnight at the Jerusalem Hotel or St. Georges Guesthouse

Day 4: Ramallah Morning departure to Ramallah. Visit the Stop the Wall campaign, the main West Bank coalition of grassroots organizations bringing international attention to land confiscation. Intro with Palestine Fair Trade Association managers and transfer to van for travel to Nablus. Visit Project Hope, an international youth volunteer organization. Walk through the Old Town and the Old Market. Visit ancient spice mills, tahini mills, nut roasting houses and bakeries using local products. Visit Sebastiya village, North of nablus and see the roman ruins in the middle of olive country. Dine at an outdoor restaurant overlooking the ruins. Meet with home-stay farmers after dinner and stay in Sebastiya

Day 5: Sebastiya village Olive Harvest in Sebastiya. Spend the day with host family on farm, having lunch in the field and dinner at host family home. Learn farming and traditional cooking practices and share stories about their daily lives. After dinner visit an old stone press in town with the host family, where the village gathers to press olives all night during the harvest. Stay overnight with host family in Sebastiya

Day 6: Jenin After traveling to Jenin, visit the PFTA and learn about their programs. Tour the Canaan bottling factory, showroom and headquarters, their organic farm in Burqin and see ancient stone-age presses in the olive orchards. Enjoy a group dinner in Jenin restaurant. Meet with home-stay farmers after dinner and stay near Jenin or Anin.

Day 7: Jenin Spend the day with host family on the farm, having lunch in the field and dinner at the host family home. Talk to host families about their lives in Jenin, the effects of the occupation on daily life and farming, and their preparation for the yearly Olive Harvest. Stay overnight with host family in Jenin or Anin.

Day 8: Jenin Olive Harvest Festival Join in the festivities with over one thousand Palestinians and Internationals. The festival day begins with fresh olive oil from the Canaan olive press. Meet community elders as they share their oral histories. Meet Canaan Scholarship recipients and talk about fair trade. Enjoy a traditional harvest meal in the olive orchards. Then there will be folk music and traditional dancing on the Canaan roof. Stay overnight at the Jenin Freedom Theatre guesthouse.

Day 9: Ramallah-Jerusalem Breakfast at Jenin guesthouse, then tour Jenin Freedom Theater and Jenin Refugee Camp. Take a van to Ramallah and transfer to Guiding Star (Global Exchange coordinators) minibus. Visit Addamer, a prisoners' rights organization. Drive back to Jerusalem, and have a late afternoon meeting with the Alternative Information Center, a joint Israeli/Palestinian educational and reporting group. Overnight stay at either the Jerusalem Hotel or St. Georges Guesthouse.

Day 10: Negev Early morning drive to the Negev Desert to meet with Bustan L'Shalom, a joint Israeli/Palestinian organization working to create self-sufficiency fair trade projects for Bedouin communities, and to bring awareness to land confiscation and house demolitions taking place in the Negev. Return to Jerusalem for an overnight stay at the Jerusalem Hotel or St. Georges Guesthouse.

Day 11: Jerusalem and depart Morning Departure from Jerusalem -- guesthouse check-out and transfer to airport There is always the option to stay longer
