Separate Oil and State Get Oil Money Out of Politics
IT'S TIME TO MAKE SURE OUR REPRESENTATIVES REPRESENT CITIZENS AND NOT OIL COMPANIES Oil companies have donated more than $116 million to politicians since 1998. The largest donations are given to a select few in key leadership positions of high influence and consequence on the oil and gas industry. Yet they are not alone. 3/4 of Congressional Representatives and Senators have accepted donations from the oil and gas industry, their executives, and/or their political action committees. This is in addition to the lobbying expenditures and ad campaigns spent on the oil industry, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars annually. The influence of oil companies on domestic and foreign policy fundamentally affects the health of our communities, global warming, war, human rights, abuse, national security, and debt and poverty in developing countries. Oil companies have earned windfall profits despite the huge increases in the price of crude oil and the fact that pump prices for gas have hit record highs. Hybrid cars, biodiesel, energy efficiency, wind power, and other sustainable technologies are functional, feasible and economically viable today- and yet our politicians continue to use OUR tax money to support and subsidize Big Oil to the tune of billions of dollars every year. The first step in ending our collective addiction to oil is reducing the oil and gas industry's influence over OUR political representatives. We have a right to have our voices heard: Oil companies don't belong in politics. It's time for a separation of oil and state. Encourage your representative to sign the Oil Independence Pledge and demand that they STOP taking contributions from the oil and gas industry.
