Mr. William Clay Ford, Jr. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ford Motor Company The American Road Dearborn, MI 48120
Dear Mr. Ford:
Ford dealerships throughout the United States are languishing empty, and the company's bonds have been relegated to "junk" status. For the fifth year in a row, the company's fleet has the worst fuel efficiency of any major US automaker.
Meanwhile consumers are lining up at Toyota and Honda dealerships to buy hybrids and other fuel-efficient cars. Why? With gas prices soaring, our environment at risk, and a war for oil raging in Iraq, consumers have finally decided that gas-guzzling SUV's are not only unaffordable and harmful to the environment, but also unpatriotic.
I urge Ford to perform an ecological and economic U-turn by adopting the following practices:
1) Increase average fleet fuel efficiency to 50mpg by 2010.
2) Produce a vehicle fleet that emits zero greenhouse gas tailpipe emissions by 2020.
We will never break our oil addiction without action by the Ford Motor Company.
Sincerely,
