2. Make Your Voice Heard.
Contact Ford today and say that fuel efficiency is your number one priority when buying a car and that you want the company to increase its fleet average to 50 mpg by 2010. You can write to CEO William Clay Ford, Jr. at:
Ford Motor Company, One American Road, Dearborn, MI 48120.
You can call the company at 1-800-392-3673.
3. Adopt a Ford Dealer
The Adopt-a-Dealer program is an easy way for anyone and everyone to get involved in the movement to break our oil addiction. Forming a coalition between local residents and Ford dealers is an effective tool in catching the attention of Ford Motor Company. The dealerships are crucial allies for two main reasons: a) Dealerships exist as the retail face of Ford; and b) When dealers complain, Ford listens. Enlisting Ford dealers as allies is a key step in getting the manufacturer to make a U-turn in its business practices. Click here to download an Adopt-a-Dealer action kit and get started today. For the Ford dealership nearest you, visit, fordvehicles.com.
4. Demonstrate at a Car Show.
Nearly every weekend there is an auto show happening somewhere in the U.S and Canada. These shows are attended by thousands of people, and are a great place to educate people about the risks of our primitive cars. You can find a list of auto shows at carshownews.com. For rally materials including postcards and pre-stenciled banners and other eye-catching props, write to cleancars@globalexchange.org.
5. Educate Your Community by Hosting a Speaker.
Communities around the world suffer the impacts of oil addiction—from protesters in Nigeria being gunned down by forces hired by oil companies to Indigenous peoples in the Artic seeing their very way of life destroyed by global warming. By sharing these powerful human stories, you can show your friends and neighbors why we must hold Ford accountable. To bring a speaker to your school or community group...
call 1-800-497-1994.
or write to speakers@globalexchange.org.
6. Ticket the Gas Guzzlers.
Many people who drive gas-guzzling SUVs are unaware of the costs of their over-consumption. You can help alert them to price of their behavior by putting a mock parking ticket on their vehicle. For a packet of SUV tickets, send an email tosuvticket@globalexchange.org.
7. Hit the Pavement.
One way of educating tens of thousands of drivers about the hazards of oil addiction is by draping a banner over a freeway overpass. Just take a bed sheet, paint a slogan on it such as "Gas Guzzling Is Unpatriotic. Jumpstart Ford," and hang it off an overpass. For more slogan ideas, write to cleancars@globalexchange.org.
8. Write a Letter to the Editor.
Letters to the editor are a terrific way of making your opinion heard. Write your local newspaper and explain why you think Ford should be doing everything it can to improve its fuel efficiency.
9. Pass a Green Fleets Resolution.
Police departments, city and county offices, and universities around the country are investing in hybrids as a way of saving money and bolstering national security. Get your community or campus to support the clean energy future by passing a resolution calling on government or college officials to study how much could be saved by investing in hybrids. To learn how you can start a Green Fleets campaign, write to cleancars@globalexchange.org.
10. Take a Day Off from Driving.
At least once a month—or once a week if you can!—take a day off from your car. Use public transportation or carpooling to get to work or school. Better yet, ride your bike or walk and refrain from using any oil at all.
11. Spread the Word!
Success in breaking our oil addiction depends not just on you, but on all of your friends. Pass this information onto your neighbors, co-workers, friends and relatives. Ask them to visit jumpstartford.com.
